I joined because there was an artist with whom I wanted to communicate. That didn't happen.

For some reason, people enjoyed the first part of my reason so much that wouldn't buy the "that didn't happen" part. So, I changed my story to "we met in a cafe, we spent a night together, in the morning we agreed to get married, but death did us part the next day." The people would gently respond that "so, you two couldn't communicate at all?" and the conversation would end amicably with a smile on both our faces.
